Global warming is not any one single event. A day might be hotter than usual, or even during a period of rapid warming (such as is occurring now), any given day might be cooler than average. Even one year of unusually warm weather, by itself, does not qualify as evidence of global warming. The summer of 2012 in the US was the warmest on record. When compared against the five year average across many decades, a clear warming trend is established.
Similarly, we had a couple of fairly cool years in the 1970s. That didn't mean the earth was cooling. But what has the long term trend been?
Another example of an effect of global warming is the extent of arctic sea ice. This year it is the smallest ever recorded. That could be significant unless it was offset by gains in Antarctic ice. It wasn't.
