The cell's cytoplasm is a non-membraned bound organelle. It covers a large area and all the cell's membrane bound organelles are suspended in it. Glycolysis does not require oxygen or any membrane bound cellular organelle for it to run to completion. It requires enzymes and ATP; so where ever glucose is in the cytoplasm the process can begin.

Glycolysis is part of the process Cellular Respiration. Without Cellular Respiration, organisms bodies would not be able to produce ATP [Adenine Tri Phosphate], or energy to function. Glycolysis itself converts Glucose into the 3 carbon molecule Pyruvate. During this conversion, 2 ATP are produced. Then, the Pyruvate from Glycolysis converts into Acetyl CoA in the Krebs [Citric Acid] Cycle. The Aceytyl CoA is the main input in the Krebs Cycle which allows for it to coninue and produce other molecules and ATP. Glycolysis also produces NADH which carries electrons to the Electron Transport Chain [Oxidation Phosphorylation] where they are used with other components to produce about 32 - 36 more ATP.

Because it fits there. Sometimes things are just because they are.

Where within the cell does the process of respiration take place?

Cellular respiration takes place in three steps: Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell, The Krebs Cycle takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria, The respiratory chain (oxidative phosphorylation) takes place in the cristae of the mitochondria.

Where in the cell does respiration take place?

Most of cellular respiration occurs within the mitochondria of the cell. Glycolysis occurs outside of the mitochondria, while the Krebs Cycle and ETC takes place inside the mitochondria.
