The graphic novels focus on the beginning of Sam and Dean life and childhood, and John's beginning in the Supernatural. The books however are not the episodes, they are stories that happen between the episodes. There are also books such a reference book about ghouls, vampires, ghosts, and werewolves based off of Supernatural. There is also a book that came out that is John Winchester's diary. :)
