It varies depending on the institution (school, college or university) and even the curriculum (major).

The short answer: a GPA of 3.90 or higher = summa cum laude (with highest honors).

Some colleges or universities may require an additional step - such as writing an essay - in addition to the GPA (Grade Point Average ). Therefore, the GPA required could be as low as 3.80+ but in addition/condition of passing a "Summa Paper" or as high4.0+ for a summa cum laude

Many institutions require a grade point average of 3.9 or above for supreme honors (summa cum laude). My institution required a 3.85

I got summa cum laude with a graduating GPA of 3.81.

It depends on the college or university. There are no standards. Typically, it is above a 3.8. Some schools require above a 3.85.
