Group :a number of persons or things ranged or considered together as being related in some way.

Faction :

A group of persons forming a cohesive, usually contentious minority within a larger group.

A group in a religion is so , because it is in line with the religions thinking . For example a Christian Church might have a group meeting of Christan housewives on a Saturday , who sing hymns and do knitting . It stops being a "group" when that collection of people do not conform with the religions ideology or direction .So a group of Christian housewives meeting in a Church on a Saturday , to sing hymns and do some knitting , is not against the religion , BUT if those Christian housewives wanted to take over the running of the Church , then it can be termed as a "Faction" within the Church .
