The U.S fought in the Vietnam war to stop the spread of communism in southeast Asia. Our government believed that if one country fell to communism, that others in the area would fall to communism too. The number of bombs dropped in the vietnam war was more than the bombs dropped in WWI and WWII put together. We were constantly fighting against guerillas in the jungles. The guerillas used an ambush type fighting style which was hard to defend against. We had troops that were trained specially for the ambush fighting style. They were called the green barrets. It was basically an endless battle against the the guerillas. We never knew which people in the south part of Vietnam ( the part we supported ) were good or bad. So basically we we fighting the guerillas in the north and in the south. We ended up then pulled out and we failed.
SOUTH Vietnam was called the "REPUBLIC of South Vietnam." Everyone in those days just called North Vietnam...NORTH VIETNAM.
There is no country called South Vietnam anymore.
There was no country called "Vietnam" during the war. There was a country called North Vietnam and another country called South Vietnam, which one are you asking about?
GI's called em Nationals in country, or Viet civilians; GI's called the South Vietnamese soldier, ARVN's (jokingly, ARVN the Marvin) (Army Republic of South Vietnam).
