Well its hard to say who ruled England during those early years as the country was divided into different kingdoms that each had different rulers. Some of these kingdoms included:Wessex (the most powerful)MerciaEast AnglesFor the earlier part of this period, the chief concern of these kingdoms was to protect themselves from the Vikings who launched many invasions during this time. The Vikings managed to conquer Mercia, Martyr Edmund, King of East Angles and later overrun Wessex.By 954 however, the last Viking king in England, Eric Bloodaxe, was forced to leave Yorvik iv (York).Anyway, if I had to give a list of the Kings during this period and the lengths of their reigns it would be:Ethelwulf (839 - 856)Ethelbald (856 - 860)Ethelberht (860 - 865)Ethelred (865 - 871)Alfred the Great (871 - 899)Edward the Elder (899 - 924)Athelstan the Glorious (924 - 939)Edmund the Magnificent (939 - 946)Eadred (946 - 955)Eadwig (955 - 959)Edgar the Peaceable (959 - 975)Saint Edward the Martyr (975 - 978)Ethelred the Unready (978 - 1013)These Kings were all Kings of Wessex, but are also considered to have been Kings of England since Wessex had overlordship (power) over much of England.A Danish King then briefly ruled:Sweyn Forkbeard (1013 - 1014)Before Ethelred returned for a second rule:Ethelred the Unready (1014 - 1016)Edmund Ironside (24 April - 30 November 1016)After the Battle of Ashingdon the Danes again ruled over England with:Canute (1016 - 1035)Harold Harefoot (1035 - 1040)Harthacanute (1040 - 1042)These were then followed by another three Kings of Wessex who were in power up until the battle of Hastings in 1066:Saint Edward the Confessor (1042 - 1066)Harold Godwinson (6 January - 14 October 1066)Edgar the Atheling (15 October - 17 December 1066)The last of these was proclaimed but never crowned.
Geographically, Luton is in Bedfordshire, but Luton has its own Borough Council and two MPs (one serving North Luton, and one South Luton). Often, the area is referred to as 'Luton and Bedfordshire' or vice versa, but this will always be with regard to the political division, not to the geography of the area.
