Comets are satellites of the sun. But whereas planets move in orbits that are nearly

circular, and are always close to their average distance from the sun, most comets

have very eccentric orbits. They spend most of their periods far from the sun, and

only a small part of the period close enough to the sun to glow, and to be visible

from earth.
