There were no left or right boots, just boots - you marched them into shape.

Actually it was considered a privilege to get a pair of boots at all. Bragg retreated South from Kentucky because he felt sorry for his troops going barefoot in winter.

Confederates in particular fought with fanatical bravery for the chance of stripping the boots off the enemy.
