The average Roman physician simply was not trusted. The medicines were awful and the methods for a cure were sometimes worse than the ailment. There was an ancient Roman saying "never make your physician your heir". However, the upper class, emperors and high ranking military men all had personal physicians who were quite good. The army had the best medical men of the times. The difference between the two classes of physicians was education. The physicians to the upper class and the army had to study their craft and know what they were doing, while the average Roman physician had little or no training.
