New Zealand was the first country to allow women to vote, in 1893. It was the first country in the Asian-Pacific region to legalize same-sex marriage. New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb to the top of Mt. Everest. In 1987 New Zealand hosted and won the Rugby World Cup. New Zealand also sent thousands of troops to help the British in World War I, and to help the Allies in World War 2. They fought for the UN in the Korean War and even sent a small force to help the US during the Vietnam War and are currently assisting in Afghanistan.
