As surgeries go, a tonsillectomy is usually fairly minor and has a low mortality rate. Since the surgery requires general anesthesia, that will be where the risk is. See the link from which this quote comes:
Death: This is a very rare but devastating complication. The factors which can cause death is massive hemorrhage and anesthetic complications such as reaction to the anesthestic or inhaling stomach contents. The incidence of death after tonsillectomy is one in every 15,000 patients. An ENT surgeon will perform 5 to 10 thousand tonsillectomy patients in his carrier giving him about a 50-50 chance of having one of his patients die from the surgery.

short answer - no
long answer - ony if it was done with VERY unsanitary equipment, and even then no more likely than if, say you scraped ur knee on a fence. even then, the worst you could almost certainly get would be a throat infection, but even that would be extremely unlikely. i have never known anyone die from the procedure
