Has anyone else had the intermitting problem of petrol fumes inside a jaguar X type 3.0SE?

I have 05 X-type 3.0 with intermittent CO2 fumes, mechanic says cabin air filter should be replaced (book recommends this every 20K miles). Petrol may be much more serious problem, though.
