∙ 11y agoToday's modern developed nations are actually shaped by science. All the things that shape your everyday life: smart phones, personal computers, airplanes, cars, skyscrapers, medicine, satellite technology, etc. are all products of the scientific method (non-religious thinking). Most developed countries have separation of church and state, meaning that religion cannot interfere with political policies and impede scientific and civil advances.
Some countries are very religiously driven and are definitely almost completely shaped by religion. Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia, Bangladesh, Niger are all extremely religious and their holy texts (Bible, Quran, Torah, etc.) basically determine the laws. These are places where you are stoned to death for being a homo-sexual, or even saying negative things about the religion.
On a lighter note, ancient pagan religions gave us our holidays that we celebrate today. Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc. are all pagan traditions that have been celebrated for over 4 thousand years and adopted by modern society.

∙ 11y agoReligion and spirituality adds a new dimension to the lives of many people. People can feel inspired by religion to design great buildings, produce great art work and write beautiful music. Religion can give people the strength to survive hard times and keep up hope for a better future.
The bad thing is that religion can create artificial differences among groups of people. Religion has played a role in much persecution and violence. The underlying reason is usually something else, but religious differences provide an excuse or rationale for actions that would otherwise not be acceptable.
