'True Christians' have not lost their way. Christ Jesus promised that He "would be with them." (Matthew 28:20) True Christians follow in Jesus' footsteps, (1 Peter 2:21) so they are not lost, because Jesus is not lost. His footsteps are clearly outlined in The Bible for all to see and follow.
But then there are also 'self-proclaimed Christians'. They have indeed lost their way. Yet they still proclaim that they are Christian. This can get confusing to onlookers.
For example: Non-Christians might hear someone (who calls themselves) 'Christian' speak about love and peace out of one side of their mouth. But then you observe that they are in the military (Bible in one hand; gun in the other). They fly planes that drop bombs that kill other fellow humans. This inconsistency is confusing, especially if they proclaim themselves to be 'Christian'. Everyone knows that Christ Jesus would not fight side-by-side with them in any war. Jesus would let the secular people, the Greeks and Romans do the fighting; but Jesus would not join them or support their wars. So yes, someone has 'lost their way'.
But then, for example is another group of Christians; they not only speak of love and peace; they would never join any military. A Roman Catholic nun wrote admiringly about one group of true Christians (in the Italian church magazine Andare alle gent:) "They refuse any form of violence and without rebelling put up with the many trials inflicted on them because of their beliefs . . . How different the world would be if we all woke up one morning firmly decided not to take up arms again, whatever the cost or the reason, just like Jehovah's Witnesses!"
As you can see, you really need to differentiate between1) those who 'call' themselves Christian; and 2) those who really act as true Christians should.
True Christians have NOT lost their way. True Christians are 'leading' the way.
