Sometimes the codec used to encode the video is not fully compatible with movie maker. Or has the file been copy protected? To check, right click on the file and click properties, if the file has a license tab it is copy protected, if not it isn't. If it isn't copy protected and it's one of these file formats:
Video files: .asf, .avi, .dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv
then it's a dodgy file. So the only real answer is if it don't work, tough. If your not too worried about quality try using a converter to convert the file to WMV (again maybe). Use the converter bundled with Realplayer that's good enough; or search the C-NET website for others. Other wise it's just hard luck!
then it is not the right format

If Windows Movie Maker does not show your video in the Preview pane, then it is not in the correct format for the program. Sometimes the audio works, but the video doesn't. That means the file is partially compatible -- at least the audio portion is. Check to see what file name extension (format) the video is in. Right-click the file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. Note the file type. If it is not one compatible with Windows Movie Maker, then it will not show in the Preview pane.
