Inside are round, red microstructures that researchers believe may be red blood cells. Scientists had previously assumed that soft tissue would not survive over a period of millions of years. Apparently, the fossilisation of the bone preserved the soft tissue inside. The researchers have since found probable blood vessels, bone-building cells and connective tissue in another T. rex bone and other fossil bones. Perhaps the soft tissue preservation process within intact fossilised bone was something like a food cannery, only better. However, no muscle tissue has been found.
