Biography of Michael Phelps

The Early Years

Michael Fred Phelps is a famous Olympic swimmer. He was born on June 30, 1985, and grew up in a Baltimore suburb. He has two older sisters (Hilary and Whitney) who swim competitively, and a mother and a father. His parents were high school sweet hearts. Father, Fred was a high school football player and now a police officer. Mother is a Baltimore middle school principle. His parents got divorced and then got back together and then in 1992 split forever. Phelps began swimming at the age of seven, partly because of the fact his sisters were and partly to provide him with a way to help get rid of his extra energy. His role models include Ian Thorpe, Tom Malchow and Tom Dolan. When he was sixth grade Phelps was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Challenges

Phelps has gone through many challenges in life some are harder because Phelps has ADHD. ADHD is a disorder that makes it hard to focus on whatever you are doing. However it does give you a lot of energy and if you can control your energy you can use the energy for what you want to do. Michael has won eight gold medals at the 2010 Olympics. Phelps has also made wrong decisions in his life. When Phelps was 19 he was got drinking and driving. His punishment was to talk at different high schools about drinking and driving and it consequences. He also had to speak about what he did at Mothers Concerned with Drunk Driving. In 2010 after the Olympics Phelps was caught smokingmarijuana and said I'm sorry it won't ever happen again.

Accomplishments

He has accomplished many things like going to every Olympics since he was 15. When he was fifteen he made it onto the American Olympic swim team. The Olympics were held in Sydney Australia in 2000. He received--gold medals--silver medals--bronze medals in Sydney. In 2002 he went to the Pan Pacific Championships and won3 gold medals and 2 silver medals. In 2003 he went to the 2003 World Championships and won 4 gold and 2 silver medals. When he turned 19 he qualified for the Olympic swim team. The Olympics were held in Athens, Greece and he received 6 gold and 2 bronze medals. In 2005 he won 5 gold and 1 silver medal at the 2005 World Championships. He went to the Pan Pacific in 2006 and won 5gold and 1 silver medal. Later in 2007 he won7 gold medals at the 2007 World Champion ships. When he was 23 he set out to break the goal of 7 gold medals at one Olympic Games. In order to do this he would have to get gold in all of his races and the men's relay. The games were held in Beijing, China in 2008. He won eight gold medals at Beijing. In 2009 he won 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal. He has a total of---medals from the Olympics Games.

Michael sponsor the Path Finder's for Autism (PFA) and the Spokesperson for Boys and Girls Club of America (SBGCA). Michael Phelps swims 2-5 hour, 6-7 days a week and his practice is planed ahead of time so when he gets to the pool he can start his training right away. He normally swims around five hours except on the weekend when he needs a break he may only do around 2 to 3 hours of training. Michael Phelps started a foundation to help young swimmers learn to swim and have a healthy life. The MP Foundation is focused on the sport, swimming and cheering on healthy, active life for children and adults. Michael Phelps Swim School is a learn to swim program, for every age and ability. Swim classes have personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, personal growth, and rescue skills. The main idea of the MP school is to make sure each participant has the opportunity to be comfortable, and safe in and by the water. Michael Phelps was one of the first students to try the program. In 2009, Michael Phelps went back to Baltimore and began his dream, to grow the sport of swimming and get more children in the water. In fall 2009, Phelps began to make his dream real, partnering with NBSS to push the Michael Phelps Swim School forward and offer swimming instruction.

The future

Michael Phelpsis back home after having a great vacation with his friends. Now back to training, getting ready for next Olimpics 2 year from now. He is planning on going to the 2012 Olimpics. It is going to take a lot of training to make it to the Olimpics in 2012. His training is going to be 2-5 hours each day so he can make it to the Olimpics. He is also planning on going to the other events in 2010 and 2011.

He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to 18 months of probation. As part of his plea agreement, he spoke at high schools and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. At the 2008 Olympics he was suspected of tacking performance enhancing drugs but after testing him 8 times they stopped. We can learn from his experiences and then we can avoid doing the same thing. When we understand what he has done wrong we learn more about what happens when you do something wrong and then we can teach others what he did wrong.
