Hermit crab died but another crab was in shell?
Congratulations! No need to rename it. It's the same hermit crab. It molted it's old skin! This means your hermit crab is perfectly healthy and can grow! Make sure you have a slightly bigger shell though. Leave it alone until it walks around and is very healthy.
If he's out of shell, he can be really stressed out, he could of died (i had this happen to me before, my hermit crab died out of his shell) or he can be switching shells, if hes on top of one.
i have a hermit crab and mine had a baby. So the original hermit crab died and grew out of its shell for the baby.
take the dead crab out of the shell.
You will know when your hermit crab is about to die because it will not move in the shell. When it is not moving it starts to fall out of its shell. Like my hermit crabs 2 of them died and now I only have 1. The first and second one did the same thing of course but they both fell out. You also know when a hermit crab dies, when they a pale or… Read More
When a sea snail dies, its shell eventually washes up on shore, where the hermit crab uses it as its new home. Therefore this would be commensalism, however since the snail already died there is no living symbiosis.
you have to buy a shell because if it molts without something to go into it will die in a matter of hours ....... my hermit crab died like that it was sad!!!
Your hermit crab will act kind of different. They might not come out of their shell for days. If you notice, a hermit crab will have hairy legs and black tips. Right before your hermit crab molts, you will notice there won't be many hairs or black tips, and they will appear worn down. But be careful, because a molting crab can be mistaken for a dead hermit crab. If your hermit crab has died… Read More
The hermit crabs probably has been out of it's shell, hermies are nocturnal. But if you are afraid that it's dead then smell the tank, if it smells like dead fish then a hermie has died :(
If your Hermit Crab has babies then leave them. You would hate it if the mother abandoned the babies and they died. Leave the litter for 2 - 4 months atleast until they get a shell and their skeloton hardens. Look after them propoly.
A hermit crab has died if you smell dead fish and you didnt feed them sea food.
You will know your hermit crab is dead when it smells horrible (dead person horribe) you could also tap its claw to see if its moving (they usually react to that) you could also feel the top of their shell . If their moving but wont come out 1.their alive 2.their probably molting (when a hermit crab is molting don't pick it up or play with it) you could also tell by tipping it over… Read More
yes but I would recommend A thorough cleaning of that shell first to prevent the next inhabitant from getting sick or parasites.
yes although it would be wise to clean and disinfect it first, you don't know why your old crab might have died.
You should try to get it off your mind.I know how it feals because I had one die before. You need to got your hermit crab off your mind.
i dont think that they do because i have a pet hermit crab and another died and they didn't eat each other because they qot on quite well! Not very often will a hermit crab eat one of its companions. However, if that hermit crab is lacking nutrients in his diet they are more prone to become cannibalistic. One must feed a well balanced diet as well as plenty of protein and chitin. Most chitin… Read More
Actually it doesn't take very long for a hermit crab to smell when it's dead. They will not smell if they just died. About 10-15 mins they will start to smell. You have to put the hermit crab up to your nose in order to smell the rotten fish smell.
It is considered a limb, not an arm. And the loss of a limb does not necessarily mean the hermie crab has died, but is a hermit crab that is very stressed. One needs to double check their tank perimeters to make sure they are correct.
Yes, there are more in your pants!
pick it up and if it doesnt respond it may have died
They won't move, drink, eat or use the loo.
Your hermit crabs shell has been stinky for a few days like a fishy smell and then you picked up one of your hermits and it fell out of his shell and he is not moving is he dead?
He is dead. I am sorry. If he is limp when you touch him he is dead. He either has mites. Or stressed. I am sorry. But I just found out mine just died. I stopped in the middle of writing this and checked. Just to make sure.... Put the opening shell part downward over a bag. See if the crab comes out... If he doesn't, blow up the bag and them drop him in… Read More
If your hermit crab has been digging more often, eating and drinking more often, and grows a sack like bag under it's claws. NEVER dig a hermit crab up! it WILL kill them, to tell if a hermie has died you need to smell the tank, if it smells like dead fish, thema hermie is dead :(:(.
What is wrong your hermit was doing fine climbing the log drinking water and going abt but today he is on his side not moving at all he is not hidden in his shell just sitting out not moving at all?
Pick up the crab, if it droops out of its shell kind of it probably molted and that is its exoskeleton and it is just a hollow discard. Look behind it and the actual crab will be there. Wait a couple days, keep giving it food and water but if you eventually start to smell a strong fishy odor the crab has died. Its probably just a molt.
If the eyes went white before the crab died, it is possible that the crab was having a problem molting. Molting is a strenuous process where the hard outer skin (called Chitin) of the hermit crab's body is shed to allow the crab to grow, much like many reptiles do. Many hermit crabs will start to lose a little of their color before they molt, and the area around the eyes can often go completely… Read More
yes mine died!!!!!!!!! we had it at a yard sale and it was a hot day. we had it on a table. well it fried. All my hermit crabs died from old age, well except for one, that I think I may have accidently drowned. Mabey.
You are babysitting your friends hermit crab which was living in a small kritter keeper so you moved it into a bigger cage with dirt and stuff and the hermit crab buried itself what should you do?
I am not exactly sure but you should probably just let it be until it comes back "up to surface". It could also be molting. Hermit crabs do this twice a year and will eat it's old skin before you have the chance to see it because the old skin is rich in calcium and stuff for them. After this they burry themselfs until there skin hardens which and take arround 1 to 3 weeks… Read More
Hermit Crabs do shed there skin (when they molt) - which is when you have to pay VERY close attention. You can tell when they're molting because they eat extra, dig holes alot more and sleep most of the day and night. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hermit Crabs look like they die and fell out of thier shell. The skin they left behind looks just like them but they only grew out of thier old skin and are… Read More
No you do not. You should put warm water on your hand, and hermit crab. Most of the time it will let go. Don't kill it!!! I have two hermit crabs, and my friend picked one up, not knowing that it could pinch so hard. So it pinched her, and my Junior in HS friend screamed and cried for a good half hour before we could get it off. I googled how to get it… Read More
If a hermit crab pinches you, run your hand under warm water and hopefully it will let go. Don't kill it. I have two hermit crabs, and my friend picked one up, not knowing that it could pinch so hard. If a hermit crab dies, it may eventually turn a different color as it decomposes or molds, but often it will look the same only dead. If you notice your crab looking a different color, it may need to molt (shed it's old skin to grow new) or may have just molted. After a molt they are often lighter and shinier for a little while while their new skin grows harder and darker.
sorry this probably isn't the answer to your question but hermit crabs are really hard to breed because when the babies hatch on the water they need to swim around and find food in the water. I found hemit crab eggs in the water but obvisly they died.
No, they just... die :( But if conditions or mites cause them to die they might crawl out of their shell before, but they usually dont. To tell if they are dead, smell (yes i said smell) the tank, and if it smells like dead fish then a hermie has died. :(

I'm not 100% sure but if you picked one up and sniffed the hermit crab then maybe but when I first had some hermit crabs I used a type of sand. At first I thought they died or something but i realized it was the sand that smelled but make sure you change out the sand, dirt or whatever you use every month or so. 1. their bodily waste, 2. it could be the food… Read More
You have two hermit crabs for two years now one died today and the other is now really depressed is it too soon to introduce a new crab?
Nope. Land hermit crabs in the wild travel in groups of thousands. They are exposed to different crabs every second; their should be no problem introducing a new one. (Make sure they're the same size though, otherwise the smaller one will be killed.)
Yes. Hermit crabs love to be social and in the wild, they go together as groups. You should get atleast 2 hermit crabs, because they will get stressed.
He died because he was in the crusade
Jo Crab died on December 18, 1981, in Oostende, Flanders, Belgium.
Iron Shell died in 1896.
Most likely your crab overheated. A crab needs tepid (not hot, not cold) water to bath in and drink from. It does not take long to heat a crab to death.
The creature living inside the shell dies. The shell is generally left empty. The SHELL does not DIE!!
The tortoise's shell is their home. The shell has a hard cover and can protect them when something hard hits it. If they do not have the shell, they would have died fast.
