Hermit crabs can. It happens when the hermit crab is changing its shell and falls over or when the hermit crab is dead it slides out or falls out of its shell! Sadly they can't always get back in there shells and die.

Hermit crabs DO molt - and sometimes out of their shells. The stuff they leave behind can look like a dead hermit crab. Even if they're out of their shell and look dead, most websites advice NOT to bury them until they start to smell - because they could still be alive! (though do separate them from your other crabs)

Yes

Not for long. Without their shells they are vulnerable. If your hermit crabs comes out of his shell you have to separate him from the others and give him plenty of shell choices.

Hermit crabs are not attached to their shells, and may leave when they choose, to find a bigger shell for growth, or because they are evicted by a stronger crab
