rizal wrote this poem when he was still enrolled in ateneo de municipalia, which was situated in what we know as padre faura in malate manila.
you see, the jesuit order, the order of priests spearheading the ateneo schools, including the current ateneo de manila university, has developed a liking for rizal and his talent. (proof of this is that rizal was convinced by the jesuits into retraction when he was about to be executed. another proof is that ateneans consider rizal as their most prized graduate.) the jesuits let rizal developed his talents and made him join different writing contests, which he won of course.
since he established a harmonious relationship with the jesuits while in ateneo municipalia, his beliefs were turned. he believed that education was vital for everyone, and the Spaniards were there to provide it. at this point, it can be said that rizal was actually partly on the spanish side.
*note: however, when he enrolled in university of santo Tomas, a dominican school, he was despised due to his and more so his brother's (paciano's) notorious involvent in the uprising against the spanish friars. his belief was changed again. he looked at the spanish government negatively.
