Historical reason for Americans choosing a bicameral system?
The framers and most other americans knew the bristish system of bicameralism quite well.
The United States of America decided on a bicameral legislature mainly for the fact that it would keep the powers balanced. The threat of tyranny from a republic is just as great as one from a single despot. The bicameral system allowed for the two houses to balance the powers of government, while giving as little power possible to the executive branch for fear of kings.
We were itching for a reason to boot the Spanish from Cuba, and the sinking of the US battleship The Maine in Havana Harbor provided that reason. Historical hindsight, however, has pretty much proved the sinking was the result of an accidental explosion where all the ammo was stored. The reason for the bicameral legislature dates back to when The Constitution was written. The New Jersey plan wanted every state to have an equal vote, which favored small states. The Virginia Plan called for representatives, with more populated states getting more representatives. In Congress, the Senate is the New Jersey Plan and the House of Representatives is, obviously, the Virginia plan. I'm not sure, but I believe we elect both.
