Although Cortland NY has a rather high rate of rape and sexual assualt for such a small city very few murders have been commited there. Records report only three murders in the city since 1853. The first being a farmer who was murdered returning to his farm 2 miles west of the village in 1904. The next two murders some historians believe are linked to the same suspect. The first happening in 1925 right in the heart of Cortland on Clayton avenue. Mrs. Elizabeth Ross was found dead on November 6th 1925 on her front lawn at her newly built home on Clayton avenue. Police suspected husband Harold Ross, however Harold was never charged as police were never able to locate him.
