According to the plaque on the wall of St. Bartholomew's Hospital museum, it was New Year's Day, 1881. Legend has it that Holmes and Watson met in the St. Bart's laboratory on that day, and the reasoning goes that the only day when Sherlock Holmes could have been the lone student in the laboratory was on the holiday.
