Drivers side. Side panel under dash. Pull lever towards the door
where is the hood release handle for a 1998 new beetle
"pop" the hood with the in car lever. get a pair of pliars and grab the wire that the plastic hood release was connected to.....this should work!
do you not have a key to open the door? if you do, use it to open the trunk and climb through to open the door manually
Well, you could run a new cable through the dash and attach it, OR do what the previous owner of one of my trucks did and attach a lawn mower pull cable to the mechanism and just have a simple release outside the vehichle. Not sure about the specifics of doing either of these things to a New Beetle, just trying to provide some constructive input.
It's actually kinda tricky. Pull the door release inside, and your hood should pop, and a pull tab should pertrude out from under the hood. grab that tab and pull down first and then to the right. This should do the trick. If not, then you will have to do what I did with my girlfriend's car: Drive it to a dealership and ask them the most embaressing question, "How do you open the hood?" Good Luck!

New Zealand's largest beetle is the Huhu Beetle (Prionoplus reticulans).
This involves replacing the hood release cable. You can buy them new from the dealer. Not an easy task however, and I do recomed a professional to do it. Its a hard job.
Under the hood on the backside of the dashboard. If you have a new one already you should be able to match it up easily.
Hood release cable has connector nuts on both ends of the cable. Loosen the connector nuts. Remove the cable retainers. The cable will come off and can be replaced with a new hood release cable.
Oh man that is a nightmare. I got the same problem and I guess I have to buy me a new Hood Release and Cable to relief me from that problem. It is sickening
