This principle states that layers of sediment are originally deposited horizontally. However, please note that it is now known that not all sedimentary layers are deposited purely horizontally and the principle is only an approximation of reality.

The strata are not necessarily horizontal - in fact they are rarely horizontal, but instead distorted as a result of pressure forces exerted on them. Some strata are even vertical due to the extreme distortion of the area.
