It is called the 'Principle of Original Horizontality' and was proposed by the Danish geological pioneer Nicholas Steno (1638-1686).

This principle states that layers of sediment are originally deposited horizontally. However, please note that it is now known that not all sedimentary layers are deposited purely horizontally and the principle is only an approximation of reality.

Singular: Stratum

Plural: Strata

The strata are not necessarily horizontal - in fact they are rarely horizontal, but instead distorted as a result of pressure forces exerted on them. Some strata are even vertical due to the extreme distortion of the area.

Which of steno's principles states that most layers of sediments are deposited in a horizontal position?

original horizontality

What is the law of original horizontality?

the law of original horizontality states that most sediments, when originally formed, were laid down horizontally. However, many layered rocks are no longer horizontal. Because of the Law of Original Horizontality, we know that sedimentary rocks that are not horizontal either were formed in special ways or, more often, were moved from their horizontal position by later events, such as tilting during episodes of mountain building.

What describes your position on the earth?

Longitude and Latitude are generally what are used to describe your position on the earth. Longitude describes your East-West position relative to some point, and latitude describes your North-South position relative to the Equator. These were historically measured with astronomical observations, but are now most commonly determined by Global Positioning System instruments.

Is altitude north and south?

Altitude is height above the ground. Latitude and Longitude are map coordinates. Lines of Latitude are the horizontal lines shown running east-to-west on maps and locate your position on the globe in the North-South direction.

What makes a tornado hit the ground?

There has to be circulation inside of a storm which if there is a tornado then it has that circulation. What makes it touchdown is when you have a strong updraft and downdraft which pushes that horizontal rotation into a vertical position which causes the funnel cloud to come in contact with the ground causing a tornado.

What is a horizontal on uneven bars?

A cast to horizontal on the uneven bars is when you push your body away from the bar so that your body is in a hollow, horizontal position. Another Answer: Horizontal is not an actual skill in gymnastics. It is the position you are in when you cast. Your cast becomes horizontal when you push yourself high enough off the bar to where you are completely straight across, like the horizon. Another position is vertical, where you are completely up and down.
