Depending on the menu of the specific movie player, you should be able to enable subtitles. Generally, in the tools section of the menu you will find the option to enable subtitles, if they exist in the movie file or DVD.
Subtitles are only available on Foreign-language films. Netflix does not currently support subtitles on instant streaming English-language films. The Wii actually allows subtitles on a majority of its films and shows but the xbox and PS3 do not support this.

Click on the video tab on the toolbar and search for the subtitle option to disable subtitles. However, if the subtitles are "hardsubbed", that is they are part of the video itself, they cannot be disabled.
Netflix is actually equipped with subtitles/captions. You just have to find the option to change the audio or subtitles, which is usually on the screen where you select the movie/TV episode you want to view

There are many enable / disable you can do on a computer, for example; start up programs, effects, services and more. The best thing is to google what you want to enable / disable on your computer. There are many tweak programs out there which tell you what the option is for and if to enable / disable it.
