how do you handle colleagues who annoys you with phony niceness?

I have colleagues who are obsessed with being nice and their niceness has become like ‘who says thank you the most’ competition and unauthentic. If you work with them superficially you find them nice but if you work with them every day, their behavior is beyond annoying. I’m trying to keep my communications with them strictly work-related and professional, but then they try to have more direct contact with everyone including me. They believe expressing their ‘gratitude’ in obvious gesture matters, but authenticity doesn’t. It is difficult to confront them as what they are doing is considered as ‘nice’. I’m trying to ignore it most of the time but I have reached the point where I feel mildly depressed when I wake up in the morning. How would you deal with the situation?

As a general rule, I try to maintain professionalism and respectfulness at all times, even if someone else's behavior may not meet those same standards. When dealing with coworkers who are overly nice or insincere in their interactions, I approach them in a calm, direct manner and express my feelings in a non-accusatory way.

For example: "It can sometimes feel like your comments lack sincerity, which makes it challenging for me to respond effectively." By keeping things focused on specific behaviors rather than making personal attacks, it allows us both to address any issues while preserving our working relationship.

What else can I help you with?
