4, 5, 7, and 8 gallon milk cans were the most common. However, the term "a milk can" is not a standard of measurement outside the local environment in which the particular cans are being used. In many instances the Milk Company, or processor owned the cans and provided them for the surrounding dairies to use. So, the size was determined by the equipment available for handling the cans.
