As of today (Jun10) 463 planets have been discovered... the math to calculate a number for the whole universe in complex, many variables, but even in unprovable scenarios, the estimate number of planets is absolutely huge.
And, with such a number of planets and possibilities for live to emerge, many scientists are saying the existence of complex life somewhere else is a "mathematical certainty".
The problem with contacting them is, as we know it now, is distance... !
