In Shakespeare's play "Othello," Cassio finds Desdemona's handkerchief, which is a gift from Othello to Desdemona. He uses it to wipe his face after being wounded in a brawl, unknowingly giving it further significance. Later, Iago uses this handkerchief as proof of Desdemona's alleged infidelity to manipulate Othello and incite his jealousy. The handkerchief becomes a crucial symbol of betrayal and misunderstanding in the play.

However, she later reveals that she found it and gave it to Iago, unaware of the chaos it would cause. Emilia emphasizes that the handkerchief is significant to Othello, but she does not grasp the full implications of her actions at that moment.
When Mr. Rosen falls, he drops the package, but doesn't realize it. Annemarie runs it to Uncle Henrik. Later, Uncle Henrik explains that the package was a heinkerchief coated in cocaine and dried rabbit blood to mess up the German K-9s sense of smell when they tried to sniff Ellen out. She along with her parents and other Jews were concealed in a hidden compartment. Ellen made it to Sweden. The book doesn't say what happened afterward.

Dramatically, the handkerchief is a MacGuffin; it is an object which keeps the plot going because of the pursuit of it. Iago gets possession of it then implants the suggestion in Othello's mind that Desdemona has given it away. Othello's pursuit of it becomes his pursuit of evidence to prove adultery. In the end it also is the object which unmasks Iago and brings about the horrible realization of the truth in Othello. The handkerchief symbolizes Othello and Desdemona's love and wedded bliss. He gave it to Desdemona as he gave her his love and asked her to be his wife. Later Iago makes him believe that she has given the handkerchief to Cassio, symbolizing her giving her love and her body sexually to Cassio, which should have been between her and Othello. Finally it is revealed that the handkerchief was stolen, symbolizing that Iago has stolen Othello's love for Desdemona and replaced it with hate, and has stolen their marital happiness from them.
