How to reconcile the idea of a loving God with that of a God who judges?
Theodicies are explanations or justifications that try to reconcile the presence of evil and suffering in the world with the idea of a loving and all-powerful God. They aim to show that despite the existence of evil, God's goodness and power are still consistent and valid.
Parts of the Old Testament describe God as a wrathful and vengeful god. The New Testament insists that God is a loving god, but Judaism has not really resiled from the Old Testament description. The early Gnostics were unable to reconcile the two separate views of God, so they insisted that there must really be two different gods.
Where did that idea come from? The Giraffe is a creation of a loving God, just as all creatures are. They are the work of His own hands and he loves them all.
