The advantages an AK-47 or AKM have are:
It does have disadvantages, too, however.
Yes, they are.
There are estimated to be well over six million AKs of all types out there (-47, AKM, AK-74, and other AK derivatives, such as the Zastava M21).
An AK-47 is a gun which is a selective fire, gas operated 7.62mm assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the 1940s. The AK stands for втомат Калашникова 47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova 47) - Kalashnikov automatic rifle, model of 1947.The AK-47 was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability, low production cost and ease of use, the weapon and its numerous variants remain the most widely used assault rifles in the world --- so much so that more AK-type rifles have been produced than all other assault rifles combined.
Kalishnikov...it is the name of the Russian who designed the AK-47.
No. AK pattern rifles are specifically banned. You can, however, buy a Vz. 58 pattern rifle.
The Dragunov and the AK 47 are 2 different guns. As for the cost of a Dragunov, original Russian rifles can fetch $4000 or better on the US market, while Chinese copies are still capable of running into the $3000 range.
Kalashnikov is the name of the designer.. all AK variants are Kalashnikov rifles in some form. The AK-47 is a specific model - the early production models, which used a milled receiver. Most of what get referred to as AK-47s are actually AKM rifles - not the model of 1947. The AKM was the modernised, simplified model of AK which entered production in 1959. It is visually distinct from the original AK-47 by the small losenge-shaped indentation over the magazine well, as opposed to the very large indentation on the AK-47 receiver.
Estimated 90 million AK-47's alone.

The AK-74 and AK-47 are both assault rifles that look identical, but the only difference is that the AK-74 is newer and uses different cartridges (ammunition).
