Some have serial numbers that can be found in published lists and some have a date code, but it is not easy to decipher them. However, you can contact Remington at the related link on the right side of this page. Go to The Remington Society of America. They have a link for Manufacture Dates http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes .

The barrel date code is the primary method of dating a Remington. Of course, if the barrel is not the original barrel for the gun that complicates things. The Remington factory could probably date it by serial number. sales@countrygunsmith.net

If you would be so kind as to post the serial number of your Winchester model 1873 rifle in your question,I would be able to tell you the date of Manufacture of your Winchester model 1873 rifle.

Starting in 1921, Remington rifles are dated by a 2 or 3 LETTER code stamped on the left side of the barrel, about a half inch from the receiver. Not by the serial number. Search for Remington Collector's Association Date Codes, and you will find the table to decipher the letters for month and year of manufacture. They are small- a magnifier and bright light will help

The Wikipedia site for marlin 336 rifles includes a table showing how to use the serial number to find date of manufacture.

The serial number should be easy to find if it's not and it's a rimfire prior to 1968 it very well may not have one. Pre-serial# Remington rifles had a date code (which will only tell you date of manufacture) It is two tiny letters on the rear left side of the barrel. (Mine happens to be k G which equals may, 1960) I found the Remington date code chart online, but I don't have it on this computer or I would send it to you. (Just Google Remington date code) Hope that is what you were looking for. Terry The chart can be found on the Remington Society of America and only rifles made since 1921 have barrel codes. http://remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes
