Petrochemical engineering is a sub-branch of the wide discipline of chemical engineering, It is very much similar to chemical engineering in the way it specializes in production of petrochemicals.
The first degree courses in chemical engineering were taught in the 1880s, both in the UK and the US. It would take 20 years, however, before the discipline was recognized as an independent science, distinct from chemistry. The term "chemical engineer" was well established as a professional occupation by 1910. The first chemical engineering professional association, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, was formed in the UK in 1922.
