The Peace Treaty of Versailles was drafted at the end of World War I to attain, essentially retribution from Germany for repairs from the war. The loss of finances and limitations of the military, communication with neighboring countries, etc. put Germany in a severe state of financial depression. When Hitler took control, he ignored a large part of the treaty (building up the army, regaining contact with old alliances, and invading neighboring countries). These led to England and France declaring war on Germany to stop them.
