The first two towers which gave their name to the Bastille were built in 1357 by the Provost of Paris Étienne Marcel. The Bastille lasted for 400 years until the French revolutionaries destroyed it, starting the very next day after the July 14, 1789 storming of the jail.

The Bastille was a prison over 400 year old in Paris that housed general prisoners, political dissenters and also victims of the King's penal lettres du cachet (arrest and imprisonment without any benefit of trial or appeal). It had a notorious reputation for holding the latter two categories of prisoners and was seen as representing the oppression and abuse of privilege by the King and the nobility of France. Its storming by Parisian demonstrators on July 14, 1789 is considered one of the actions that initiated and influenced the actions that occurred during the French Revolution. It eventually led to the abolition of monarchy and the founding of the French Republic, which is why the French Republic celebrates its anniversary as a national holiday every year on July 14, regardless of the day of the week.
Bastille Day takes its origin from July 14, 1790, exactly one year after the storming of the Bastille, which was the first day of the Fête de la Fédération, the celebration of the union of the French people against monarchy and toward the founding of the first French Republic.According to the records, several hundred thousand people from all over France, including the deputies from all the then 85 French departments, attended the festivities that lasted for several days on the Champ de Mars, where the Eiffel Tower is now located. The current Bastille Day, or Fête Nationale in French, was founded by law in 1880 and has been held since then on July 14 every year, regardless of the day of the week.

It was only the beginning of of a long hard road. After the fall of the Throne and its government, as always, a huge power vacuum developed and there were faction struggles to fill the void. Robespierres faction finally clawed its way to the top and so began the the Reign of Terror. Robespierre's idea of democracy left a lot to be desired and many were worse off.The struggle continued and after a long 10 years Robespierre was disposed and finally the First Republic took proper shape.
