HIV/AIDS has a significant impact on families:

  • To the person who is infected, a diagnosis of HIV means that they will be dealing with a chronic disease for the rest of their lives. This means that they will require medical attention, possibly medications, hospitalizations and other medical interventions as the disease progresses.
  • To the family, living with a person with HIV/AIDS may not necessarily affect their day to day physical lives, but the psychological/mental repercussions are significant. There is the fear of illness and death. There is also the worry that the HIV infected person will deteriorate with time.
  • HIV patients may also have to deal with other issues such as whether or not to have children, the complications of starting new relationships, who to disclose their illness to and the fear of rejection and stigma.

Can HIV be cured within a certain period from the time of infection?

Yes, actually. If you think you have been exposed to HIV there is a treatment called HIV prophylaxis. This can greatly reduce the chances of HIV forming and if it doesn't then it can lessen the effects of HIV. There can be a myriad of side effects such as headaches, lethargy, and nausea. The treatment should be started right after suspected exposure and lasts up to a month. It is also expensive and limited in availability. Good Luck!
