Vishnu being supreme god himself, but incarnated as Krishna, had to leave behind the mortal body some way, some day. He had decided how to do it. He was lying down, and a hunter from a distance, mistook his foot as a face of a deer and shot an arrow. That was just enough pretext for Krishna to move out from mortal body.
