Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus and brought it down to Earth and gave it to man. He then taught man to cook, forge metals, and other useful skills that made civilization what it is today. When Zeus found out, he chained Prometheus to a mountain and had a vulture eat Prometheus's liver every day. Zeus also decided to punish man by making Pandora, the first woman. She was given a box. She was ADHD so she opened it, releasing all bad things to mankind. Only Hope was left in the box.

Why did the soviet authorities erected a statue to Prometheus near Chernobyl when the nuclear power station was first built?

Because Prometheus the titan gave the gift of fire to humankind so that they can start their civilization, live in cities and build empires. He is the symbol of intellect which pierces through the darkest night and brings prosperity to humanity instead of chaos. Nuclear power was considered to be as important to humanity as fire; for us, technological development is the new "Prometheus" which provides us with the "gift" of nuclear fusion. Ironic, considering that Prometheus was caught and tortured by the gods - and nuclear fusion destroyed everything around Chernobyl in a nuclear holocaust.

Why was Zeus angy at the Prometheus?

Zeus really was all about having power over the humans. He saw himself as almighty and thought nothing of the mortals. On the other hand Prometheus was willing to give himself for the humans. He was thought to bring fire to the earth from Mt. Olympus. Also he scalped humans out of clay and they were unhappy so he decided to give them fire to brighten their lives (even though he suffered harsh punishments from Zeus for stealing the flame). Of course all of this is in Greek Mythology.

Are the Apples from the Tree of Knowledge from the story of Adam and Eve and the fire from the story of Prometheus alike in many ways?

No. Knowledge of fire was not knowledge. The fear was that after being given fire man would rise above the beast by himself, become wise (ON HIS OWN) and perhaps or maybe even inevitably cast aside the Gods. Maybe giving the fire and denying the fruit were both done to help us.

Why is Zeus so severe with Prometheus?

The titans were his enemy in the War of the Gods, and then the remaining ones were his cowed subjects, so any attempt to defy him could be seen as the Titans rebelling again. Also he had a huge superiority complex and wanted to remain better than the humans and so didn't like them having things he wanted to reserve solely for the gods.
