In 1970 people were starting to worry about air and water pollution. There had been a big oil spill the year before in Santa Barbara, California, and US Senator Gaylord Nelson thought that a special day would gather the energy of Americans. Twenty million people gathered that first Earth Day all across America. April 22, 1970.
the idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour.
Earth Day was started by Gaylord Nelson.
EARTH DAY WAS STARTED IN THE 1960S
No U.S. President has instituted an Earth Day. Earth Day was originally proposed by the peace activist John McConnell. An environmental Earth Day was started by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson.
