The chimpanzee character Cheeta (sometimes billed as Cheetah, Cheta, or Chita) was never in any of Edgar Rice Burroughs' original Tarzan novels. The character is a product of the movies, and does have a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars at 110 South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, California, USA.

It IS known that Cheeta (played by Jiggs, the chimpanzee) was first introduced in 1932's Tarzan the Ape Man.

There were many monkeys actually, but the main one was one of Tarzan's best friends: Terk, the FEMALE ape. She is almost like Tarzan's older sister and has a wisecracking, tomboyish attitude.

"Tarzan" means "white skin" in the language of the apes. Kala noticed that this strange baby she had retrieved had white skin, so she dubbed him "Tarzan."
