We are not privy to that, according to Scripture; the earth had already been created, and in Genesis 1:2, "...became void" (corrected translation). This point of view is still somewhat debated; and you will note that most Bibles read "and the earth WAS void," but Bible lexicons are now available online.

In fact, in Job 38, God challenges Job or any human to tell Him how He created it - simply because they were not present.

The first answer is correct in that the Genesis account opens with the 'renewal' of the face of the Earth as a catastrophic event destroyed not only the surface of the Earth but the entire solar system as telescopes and space exploration have attested to. Some point to Isaiah 14:12-21 and Ezekiel 28:11-19 as the starring culprit in this destruction of the Earth that was renewed in the Genesis account.:
