The first part is the diesel engine whitch works the same as any normal internal combustion piston engine, it has a out put shaft attached to the crank (the same as any car engine) which is conected to the actual generator. The generator is just a large alternator- the shaft of the alternator is driven by the diesel engine(usually no clutch is used). A governor is used between the alternator and the diesel engine so that when load is placed on the alternator (you plug a power tool in to the generator for example) the engine revs pickup to spin the shaft fast enough to produce sufficeint electricity.
