A smoke particle moves in a jerky motion.They are constantly moving about and changing direction.

This is due to the smoke particle colliding with the air particle which gives it a 'push'.The direction of the push changes at random.This collision happens repeatedly,at random,with each smoke particle.

This motion is called 'Brownian motion'.
