The basic principal is a coil of wire wrapped around a non ferrous cylinder. In this cylinder there is a ferrous metal plunger which can move freely the length of the cylinder. A spring against the plunger holds the plunger so that it is only allowed to enter the cylinder by about a quarter of its length. When current is applied to the solenoid coil the plunger is drawn into the cylinder by the electromagnetic field generated by the coil. On the end of the plunger there is a seal that is used to cover a small hole in the valve body. When this hole is opened the main valve opens. When the current is removed from the coil the plunger is pushed back by the spring to cover the small hole in the valve body and there by closing the main valve.

A solenoid is a coil with a center core that has a piece of iron. When an AC voltage is applied to the coil it creates a magnetic field and the iron piece is moved which either opens or closes a valve or moves an actuator of some sort.

A solenoid switch is a heavy duty relay.

The solenoid (coil of wire) is turned into a magnet, by applying a DC current.

The magnet attracts a hinged piece of iron (or magnet), placed across the end or in the coil, against a spring.

The armature (hinged piece of iron) is also attached mechanically to a set of switch contacts. So when the armature moves, the switch contacts are made.

When power is removed from the solenoid, the magnetism disappears and the armature returns to it's resting position via the spring.

This is useful where electrical control of a big, or complicated, set of switches is required.

On a car, the wiring to the ignition switch can be quite small, as it only passes a small current to the solenoid.

The solenoid then operates a massive switch, with very large wires, to the starter motor, which draws several hundred amps.

Thus cost and resistance is kept to a minimum.

Does a 99 Mitsubishi diamante have an egr solenoid or just the egr valve. If it does have the solenoid where is it related to the valve?

Yes, the Diamante has an EGR solenoid. On any Mitsubishi, if the car has an egr valve, it has a solenoid to operate the valve. Just follow the vacuum line from the valve and it will go to the solenoid. There may be another one way valve between the valve and the solenoid, though. The solenoid is electronic.

What is direct acting solenoid valve?

A direct acting solenoid valve is one in which the action of the solenoid alone switches the valve gate. Most solenoid valves are "piloted", which means that a relatively small solenoid valve is used to allow pressurized air to actuate the valve gate mechanism. Because the solenoid does all of the work in a direct acting valve, the solenoid must therefore be larger than that of a piloted valve in order to generate the switching force. Piloted solenoid valves have the advantage of being more compact and consuming less current than a direct acting solenoid valve. Direct acting solenoid valves are useful when switching low pressure fluids.
