Several things happen when going up to a higher altitude: First there are short term changes such as breathing more rapidly (hyperventilation) and increasing blood flow by increasing heart rate. This has a limit as the main stimulus for these responses is C02 not oxygen. On a longer term the number of red blood cells are increased (polycythaemia), higher hematocrit and a decrease in plasma volume. Additionally muscles increase their blood supply by stimulating the development of more capillaries and myoglobin content is increased as well as the enzyme: , 3-diphosphoglycerate.

Acclimatization to high altitude occurs through a process called physiological adaptation. When exposed to low oxygen levels at high altitudes, the body responds by increasing the production of red blood cells to carry more oxygen, creating a higher breathing rate to take in more oxygen, and increasing blood flow to vital organs. These adaptations allow the body to function more efficiently in oxygen-depleted environments over time.

Why do we get altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness occurs when people increase altitude too quickly. What is the cause of altitude sickness? Acute mountain sickness is caused by reduced air pressure and lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. The faster you climb to a high altitude, the more likely you will get acute mountain sickness. You are at higher risk for acute mountain sickness if: You live at or near sea level and travel to a high altitude. Oct 16, 2017
