It's hard to explain this in words but here goes.

There are two ways a shadow changes size based on the position of the light source.

  • If the light is just above and in front of the object the shadow is long, but as the light moves above the object the shadow gets shorter and shorter and shorter until when the light is directly above the object there is little to no shadow at all.
  • If the light is directly in front of an object, like a person, as the light gets closer the light rays can only get past the object at a wider and wider angle (out to the sides) so the area with no light (the shadow) becomes wider and wider.

Why does the length and position of my shadow change as I walk towards a lamppost and away from the lamppost?

Light leaves the lamp and travels in straight lines from its point source. As you move away from the source, the angle between you and the light changes and this the length and position of your shadow changes.

Why when the length and position of my shadow changes as i walk towards a light source and when i walk away from the lamp post?

If the direction from which the light comes changes, then the direction of the shadow changes as well. The shadow basically points away from the light source.

Why do shadows change as the position of the sun changes?

A shadow is always at the direct opposite side of the light source, so as the light moves the shadow moves.

Why is your shadow sometimes in front of you and sometimes. behind you?

Your shadow will fall in the direction opposite the source of light - with you between the light source and the shadow. The direction of your shadow relative to you will depend on what direction you are facing. If you are facing toward the light source, the shadow will be behind you.If you are facing away from the light source, it will be in front of you.If you have the light source to your right, the shadow will be to your left.If you have the light source to your left, the shadow will be to your right. If the light source is directly above you, the shadow will be directly under you.If you move past a light source, your shadow will move from behind you to beside you and then to in front of you.

How would you hit the metal rod to create a longitudinal wave?

You would either position the object creating the shadow perpendicular to the light source or move it closer to the light source.

What is the size of the shadow and the distance of the object from the light source when a shadow is formed?

If you are using a point light source, the shadow's size is the object's size divided by the distance from the light source to the object multiplied by the distance from the light source to the shadow.

What causes the position of the sun in the sky and shadows to change?

When the light is thrown on an object, shadow takes place on the opposite direction of the light source. So as the light source moves, the shadow does the same. The sun "moves" because the earth is rotating and revolving around it.

Why do shadows sometimes bend towards each other?

Position of te sun and the position of the object have affect on the shadow length. The higher the sun is in the sky the shorter the shadow. The lower in the sky the longer the shadow. Try this with a lamp or a flashlght on a wall. ?Making shadow puppets with your hands on the walls is a great way to learn about this. There are a number of really gifted shadow puppeteers on you tube to learn from.

When you place something close to a light source will it make a big shadow or a small shadow?
