It's hard to explain this in words but here goes.
There are two ways a shadow changes size based on the position of the light source.

A shadow is always at the direct opposite side of the light source, so as the light moves the shadow moves.
When the light is thrown on an object, shadow takes place on the opposite direction of the light source. So as the light source moves, the shadow does the same. The sun "moves" because the earth is rotating and revolving around it.
A shadow forms whenever there is a source of light and something opaque that stands in front of the light.
Shadow from light source always bigger than object but shadow from the sun is the same size as object. Great different is due to the distance of light source. Size of shadow is double at distance x 2 source to object. Shadow is always bigger than object. You will notice your shadow is bigger in light bulb or stadium spot light but the shadow from sun is the same size as object. This is due to great distance from sun to us (150 million km approximately) the double distance to see our shadow to be double is at 300 million km from the Sun. at merely 10 m or 100 km is almost no distinguishable different in shadow size to the object. We then presume shadow cause from sunlight is equal to the size of the object.

Light leaves the lamp and travels in straight lines from its point source. As you move away from the source, the angle between you and the light changes and this the length and position of your shadow changes.
If the direction from which the light comes changes, then the direction of the shadow changes as well. The shadow basically points away from the light source.

You would either position the object creating the shadow perpendicular to the light source or move it closer to the light source.
If you are using a point light source, the shadow's size is the object's size divided by the distance from the light source to the object multiplied by the distance from the light source to the shadow.

Position of te sun and the position of the object have affect on the shadow length. The higher the sun is in the sky the shorter the shadow. The lower in the sky the longer the shadow. Try this with a lamp or a flashlght on a wall. ?Making shadow puppets with your hands on the walls is a great way to learn about this. The closer an object is to a source of light the larger the shadow it will cast.
