An ammeter is connected in series. A voltmeter is connected in parallel. ammeter should always be connected in series instead of parallel becoz it is a low resistance device and we know that resistance is inversly proportional to current so more current will pass through it and if it is connected in parallel than it may get damaged
Polarity
It would be equivalent to adding a high value resistor (>10M ohms) in series in the circuit. Voltmeters typically present a high internal impedance so as to not change the current flow in the circuit you are tying to measure. the circuit wont work the voltmeter only takes a voltage reading power does not actually pass through the meter sometimes it can be used to measure very low leakage current using the hi impedance of the meter. EXAMPLE leakage offset from an amplifier. it could be into the nanoamps.
Generally electronics meters may be ammeter Or Voltmeter. So for measuring the components Value We use a small small circuits . Ex :- to measuring the value of Resistor we supply voltage acroo it & add a Ammeter to measuring the Current thats why we can find value of resistance using Ohm's Law.
The old voltmeters were an ammeter in series with a resistor (which set the range). Digital voltmeters may sense voltage directly or current through a resistor - and then use digital circuits to convert the reading into alpha-numerics.

If lights randomly go off, there is likely a wiring issue. Using a voltmeter or ammeter may find a break in the wire or a short circuit of some kind. A fuse could also be loose.
To be specific, a voltmeter is a tool used especially in science to calculate the differences of electric potential of two circuits. There are quite a few types of voltmeters and they are also quite portable which may be ideal for traveling with.
Use an ammeter connected in series with the supply. Make sure the ammeter is of sufficient size to cope with the maximum current. Add up all the wattages of devices used (stamped on them) to get a clue as to how much it may take. Divide the wattage by 12v to get Amps. On a vehicle, do not crank the engine with the ammeter attached to the battery. Unless the ammeter can stand several hundred amps. (Unlikely)
The ammeter will only read when connected properly. If the meter is connected backwards, then the meter reads the wrong way. If it is a digital ammeter then it may not work at all.

Connecting an ammeter in parallel with a circuit element is hazardous. Because of its negligible resistance, it is equivalent to applying a short circuit across that element, and the resulting current through the ammeter may severely damage the instrument if it is not fused.
