The cigarette smoke will enter the a/c system through the recirculating vent and pull it up into both the evaporator and the vents, this will leave the residue stuck on both of these items and it is just about impossible to remove...
Also on some vehicles with (ATC) automatic temperature control, aside from the above the smoke will contaminate many of the in car sensors and this will cause the a/c and heating to stop working correctly.......
